Abraham moves on to 3rd round in state tourney

The Newington Indians boys tennis team kicked off the Class L state tournament with a solid all-around showing
 
Ron Abraham entered the day as the 11 seed, and showed why he got the billing with two impressive performances. In the first round, he took down Platt’s Joe Lunderman 6-0, 6-0, and in the second he topped Digby Philpott from New Canaan 6-0, 6-0.

 

Connor Buckley and Nick Mamet battled their way through the prelims before falling in the first round. Buckley beat Austin Wong from Pomperaug 8-4 in the prelim, while Mamet knocked off Ben Dauza from Middletown 8-2 in his prelim contest.
Peter Galante rounds out the singes competition with a hard-fought loss to Fairfield-Ward’s Henry Johnson.

In doubles action, Adam Porell and Jason Simonides fell to Steven Barbieri and Sergei Guoni from Kennedy 6-0, 6-2. Abbas Akbar and Stan Kukhniy were defeated by Bradley D’Aleilia and Tyler Hatfeld from Darien, while Mike Rubalsky and Loi Nguyen fell to Chris McCormack and Eric O’Loughlin from RHAM 6-4, 6-2.
 
“We’re very impressed,” Newington head coach Don Lukowski said. “Our guys worked hard all year and played hard today so we’re very proud. I’m excited for Ron’s match against (No.5) Alex Reiger from Daniel Hand on Monday, it should be a good match.”
